Wooster Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo Concert Saturday, Feb. 9

WOOSTER 鈥 69直播鈥檚 Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jeffrey Lindberg, and Jazz Combo, directed by Greg Slawson, will present a concert on Saturday, Feb 9, at 7:30 p.m., in Gault Recital Hall of Scheide Music Center (525 E. University St.). The concert will feature guest guitar soloist Henry Johnson.
Selections to be performed include Wes Montgomery鈥檚 鈥淩oad Song鈥 and 鈥淣aptown Blues,鈥 Jimmy Forrest鈥檚 鈥淣ight Train,鈥 Oliver Nelson鈥檚 鈥淪tep Right Up,鈥 and Henry Mancini鈥檚 鈥淒reamsville,鈥 as well as 鈥淒own by the Riverside.鈥
Johnson is a Grammy-nominated guitarist and vocalist whose musical roots run deep into gospel, blues, and jazz. He has released seven recordings under his own name and over 40 with other artists. His most recent group, The Organ Express, is patterned after the hard-swinging jazz groups of the 1960s using the instrumentation of guitar, saxophone, organ, and drums. Besides composing and performing, he is also a contributing writer for聽Just Jazz Guitar, Downbeat, and聽Jazz Improv, as well as an instructor of jazz guitar studies at Roosevelt University鈥檚 Chicago College of Performing Arts.
Lindberg, professor of music at Wooster, is also the director of the highly acclaimed Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Chicago’s oldest professional jazz orchestra in continuous operation. Slawson is the jazz piano and music technology instructor at Wooster.
