Annual Phi Sigma Tau Lecture to Feature Adriel Trott

WOOSTER, Ohio 鈥 Adriel Trott, associate professor of philosophy at Wabash College, will present 鈥淭he Matter of Sexual Difference in Aristotle鈥檚 Biology鈥 at 69直播鈥檚 annual Phi Sigma Tau lecture on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m., in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.).
According to Trott, 鈥淎ristotle鈥檚 account of sexual reproduction is often considered the root of the hierarchical opposition between form as male and matter as female. But form in the figure of semen curiously works through material elemental powers of heat and air. This talk considers the sense in which semen and thus form in generation is interrelated and dependent on material to do its work and the implications of this position for thinking the gender binary.鈥
Trott is the author of 鈥淎ristotle on the Nature of Community,鈥 and her research focuses on how ancient philosophy can be a resource both for diagnosing contemporary conceptions of political life,聽of being human, of nature, of gender, and for presenting alternatives to these accounts.聽She received her bachelor鈥檚 degree from The College of William and Mary and both a master鈥檚 degree and Ph.D. from Villanova University.
