WOOSTER, Ohio 鈥 Helena Tomas, associate professor of archaeology and director of graduate studies at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, will present 鈥淟inear A: Deciphering Europe鈥檚 Earliest Script,鈥 on Monday, Nov. 12, at 69直播. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.).

Tomas will discuss some ways of understanding texts in Linear A, the earliest European script known to exist. It was used by the Minoan civilization (circa 2000鈥1450 BC), and developed as a result of expanding economic activities that accompanied the growth of Cretan palatial centers. Thus the consequent need for a well-structured administrative system. This administrative usage allows experts a partial understanding of texts in Linear A, even though the script remains undeciphered.

Tomas鈥檚 research interests are focused on Aegean Bronze Ages scripts and administration, and Bronze Age relations between the Aegean, the Balkan peninsula, and central Europe. She recently co-edited the volume 鈥淏etween the Aegean and Baltic Seas: Prehistory Across Borders.鈥 She received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Zagreb, and Ph.D. from the University of Oxford.

Tomas鈥檚 lecture is sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America, as well as Wooster鈥檚 archaeology student colloquium, program in archaeology, cultural events committee, and chapter of Lambda Alpha national honorary society. There will be an open reception with beverages and snacks after the presentation in the foyer outside the lecture room.
